Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Psalm 34:8
The psalmist enthusiastically invites us to taste and see that the LORD is good, when he says Oh, taste and see — the goodness of the LORD is so real that it becomes sensory as we taste, it enables us to see Spiritual things that cannot be discerned in the natural. How then do we taste in order to see?
The word of God allows us to taste of His goodness in a very real sense. It is how the Spiritual realm enters into the natural realm, in a way that is digestible for us. Psalm 119:103-104 puts it this way — How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way. By the sweet taste of His word we get understanding as He leads us in the path of righteousness; therefore we come to hate every false way; because His word causes us to fall in love with truth, so that the taste of false ways are beyond bitter, they become unbearable.
His word is truth as Jesus says in John 17:17 — Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. We are set apart and remain in the way of truth because we have tasted His word that is sweet in our mouth. We are also blessed because we trust in Him. Our trust in God is made manifest by hearing and obeying His word. This happens when we take the word into our hearts and minds on a daily basis. Just as we taste our natural food daily, we should eat the word of God daily for the renewing of our minds.
Job was so dependent on the word of God in his daily life, he said; I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food. [Job 23:12] As people of God, we should crave His word (which is our spiritual food) more than our natural food.
Have you tasted His word today? Can you see that the LORD is good? The more that we trust Him, the more we can see beyond our present circumstances. Oh, how sweet it is to know the Savior, just to take Him at his word. Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
